Printing Brochures

Printing Brochures

In Impress, Draw, Web, and Writer, you can print a a document so that it can be made into a brochure. When the pages of the printed brochure are folded in half and stapled, there are two slides on each side of each page, and they're in the correct order for a brochure. Two pages are printed on each sheet of paper. (You'll need to change the paper size in Page Setup to fit the document onto letter-size paper; see the procedure for tips on setting margins.)

How Brochure Printing Works

Here's how brochure printing works for an eight-page brochure, if you're not using a duplex printer.

  • Select Brochure and print Right or Front only to a single-sided printer The program prints pages 8, 1, 6, and 3, in that order, on two sheets of paper.

  • Select Brochure and print Left or Back only to a single-sided printer The program prints pages 2, 7, 4, and 5, in that order, on two sheets of paper.

  • Select Brochure and print both front and back to a tumbled duplex printer The program prints 8, 1, 2, 7, 6, 3, 4, and 5, on two sheets of paper.

The fun thing about printing brochures is that it works two or three different ways, among four applications. Both applications print the pages in the same order, as shown in Figure 4-47 and Figure 4-48, but the page dimensions are different. The brochure is one-fourth the size of the original document. the program shrinks the font and page dimensions so that you only print on half of a letter- sized piece of paper, as shown at right, but doesn't turn the page 90 degrees, as it should.

Before You Begin

Note on brochures in Web

You're better off having a duplex-capable printer, or else you're printing two copies of every brochure. See Setting Up a Duplex Printer or Making a Duplex Printer Print Single-Sided on page 57 for more information.

Setup for Draw and Impress

You'll need to modify the page size, then adjust the content as necessary to fit within the smaller page size.

If you print without changing the margins, you'll end up with only 2/3 of the contents of the odd pages. Choose Format > Page and select the Page tab. From the Paper format list, select User paper size and enter dimensions in the Width and Height fields below it. Figure 4-50 illustrates the settings for a portrait document printed on letter-size paper.

    Note

If your printer prints cover sheets for every print job, add an extra sheet of paper on top of the sheets, or turn off cover sheets.

  8. Click Properties again and make sure that the orientation and paper size are still correct.

  9. Click Options again. In the Printer Options window, select Brochure again.

    • If you're using Web, select Reversed

    • If you're using Writer, Draw, or Impress, select Left (or Back)
