Scanning Images Into Documents

Typically when you scan an image, especially if it's just one picture, the scanner includes all the empty space around the image as part of the scan. This can make a scanned object take up a lot of space when you scan it into Writer. But Writer lets you crop pictures, which is perfect for handling scanned images.

If you want to save images you scan, we recommend scanning them into Image and saving them. You can then insert them into Writer. (Or you can scan them into Writer, then copy and paste them into Image.)

For information on adjusting scanned images within the flow of a text document, such as anchoring, moving, and wrapping text around, see Tips for Adjusting Inserted Objects and Fixing Broken Links on page 304.

  1. Make sure your scanner and software are properly installed and configured, and that the scanner is turned on and plugged into the computer.

  2. In Writer, click where you want to insert the scanned image.

  3. Choose Insert > Graphics > Scan > Request. Use the scanner software that launches to scan the image. After the scan, you may need to close the scanner software. The scanned image is displayed in Writer.

To crop the image, see Cropping and Resizing Inserted Pictures on page 276.
