Web Links

The Web Links module is essentially a copy of the Downloads module. It has the same main categories and subcategories, and links to web pages can just as easily link to files.

However, the cousin modules have numerous differences. The Filesize, Version, Homepage, and Hits fields found in the Downloads module are not present for Web Links. The Description field for Main Categories is not required for Web Links, although the specific links themselves do require it.

Unlike Downloads, Web Links listings are not maintained in alphabetical order. This is true throughout the module for both categories and links. Web Links are displayed by ID in the order items are added. It can be a bit of a flaw, hindering this module's usability, but if you plan out your Web Link categories well and in advance of creating the structure, you will not need to make changes later affecting the order. It's also a known issue that will likely be fixed in future releases.

Note

Deleting subcategories also permanently removes all links contained within them. Deleting main categories removes all links, subcategories, and the subcategories' links. Be careful when removing categories.

Compare Figure 6.13 with Figures 6.9 and 6.10. Web Links subcategories are displayed on the main page beneath their parent categories. It has the benefit of giving users immediate access to deeper content, but many PostNuke site managers have felt the page becomes visually unbalanced very quickly the more subcategories you add.

The Web Links module might have a few issues, but it is a clean, stable module that can also be used as a built-in spare Downloads module. PostNuke's easy-to-edit source also ensures you can make whatever changes you need to customize and polish its display.
