Chapter 3. Configuration Management in International Standards

Chapter 3. Configuration Management in International Standards

Numerous international standards and guidelines cover software development and, hence, configuration management. Many standards are related to a specific type of product. Almost all include a safety aspect, as the product types they deal with are classified as safety-critical in one way or another. This may be, for example, products for the medical or aviation industries.

Standards and guidelines reflect the experience of many experts, and using them may serve a number of purposes. It may, for instance, inspire confidence in customers toward the products and provide producers with help and inspiration in the production process.

This chapter provides an overview of standards that (also) deal with configuration management. Standards and guidelines provide, if not a description of "best practice," at least a description of "good practice," and may therefore be useful for inspiration on to how to tackle configuration management. Some of the standards, the ones that seem to be of most interest to software producers, are commented in a little more detail. Sources for each are listed in the bibliography.

The purpose of this chapter is to provide an impression of what is going on internationally with regard to standardization of configuration management.
