24.3 Configuration Management ProcessModel Examples

Appendixes A and B are examples of configuration management process models. Appendix A is a tiny extract of a quality system holding all the processes in an anonymous company, included to show how processes may be presented. The quality system is written in Lotus Notes and is available on the company's intranet. The extract is what is relevant for configuration management for source code and related items. The descriptions are therefore parts of a larger whole and include references to parts not shown. The degree of formalism is low, similar to the one in Chapter 5Examples.

This example shows one process area. Each process area in the quality system is divided into a number of processes, which are again divided into activities. The process flows are illustrated in flowcharts, using the conventions shown in Figure 24-2. As the figure shows, each activity may have an associated procedure description and templates.

Appendix B is part of a user guide to a tracing tool at a small company. It is included for two purposes: to show how processes may be presented and as a practical example of how tracing is handled. The procedures shown are part of a quality system that contains more procedures. The quality system is written in the IMAP format and is available in hard copy and on the company intranet. The latter allows hypertext references to other procedures, templates, and so on.
