Creating and Using Variables

To get to the Variables window, right-click on the designer surface and select Variables. You can find the same menu item on the SSIS main menu tree. Like other windows in the VS environment, the Variables window is dockable and you can move it, collapse it, and, if you're on a multiscreen monitor, move it to your second monitor.

Figure 12.3 shows the buttons that are visible at the upper-left of the Variables window. You use these buttons to create, delete, and sort the variables. The first button on the left is the Add Variable button. The next button is the Delete Variable button. The next button toggles system variables. When you click the Show System Variables button, the designer makes all the system variables in the scope visible. The next button is the Show All User Variables button. This button shows you all the variables in the entire package that are not system variables. Finally, the Choose Columns button allows you to choose which properties of variables will show up as columns in the window.

To change a variable, select the one you want to change and press the F4 key or select View from the main menu and click Properties Window. The Properties window is where you make all your changes to variable properties or you can change the variable values within the Variables window directly. There is no special editor for them.
