Customizing Keyboard Shortcuts

Although Illustrator provides many built-in keyboard shortcuts, some menu commands and tools don t have keyboard shortcuts. Illustrator enables you to customize its default keyboard shortcuts and create shortcuts of your own to suit your needs. You can even define multiple sets of keyboard shortcuts so that you can switch from one to another as needed.

To customize keyboard shortcuts, follow these steps:

  1. Press [Ctrl]-[Alt]-[Shift]-[K] (on Windows) or [ z ]-[Option]-[Shift]-[K] (on the Mac) or choose Edit Keyboard Shortcuts to display the Keyboard Shortcuts dialog box. Figure 3-2 shows the Windows version of the Keyboard Shortcuts dialog box with customization under way.

Figure 3-2: Customize Illustrator s default keyboard shortcuts or create new shortcuts of your own in the Keyboard Shortcuts dialog box.

  2. In the Set drop-down list, choose which set of keyboard shortcuts to work with:

    • Illustrator starts you off with a set called Illustrator Defaults that contains its default keyboard shortcuts.

    • You can create a new set of shortcuts explicitly at this point or wait until you ve customized one of the existing sets. To create a new set of shortcuts, click the Save button, type the name for the new set in the Save Keyset File dialog box, and then click the OK button. Illustrator creates the set and selects it in the Set drop-down list.

  3. In the drop-down list below the Set drop-down list, select the type of shortcuts you want to work with: Menu Commands or Tools. Illustrator displays the contents of the selected category in the main list box.

  4. If you choose Menu Commands in step 3, expand the category of commands you want to work with. For example, expand the File category if you want to work with the commands that appear on the File menu. (If you choose Tools in step 3, you don t need to expand the list of tools, as Illustrator doesn t break it up by category.)

  5. Click the command for which you want to create a shortcut or change the existing shortcut. Illustrator displays a selection box in the Shortcut column.

  6. Press the keys for the shortcut you want to use. Illustrator enters them in the text box.

  7. If the new shortcut conflicts with an existing shortcut, Illustrator displays a warning (as in Figure 3-2). Click the Undo button to undo the shortcut assignment, or click the Go To button to go to the conflicting existing shortcut so that you can change it.

  8. To delete a shortcut, select its row and click the Clear button.

  9. To delete a set of keyboard shortcuts, select it in the Set drop-down list and click the Delete button. In the confirmation message box, click the Yes button.

  10. Once you ve made the first change to the set of shortcuts you re customizing, Illustrator selects the [Custom] entry in the Setting drop-down list instead of the set you started customizing. To save your changes, click the Save button, enter the name in the Save Keyset File dialog box, and then click the OK button. If you customized a set other than the Illustrator Defaults, Illustrator suggests that set s name in the Save Keyset File dialog box.

  11. Click the OK button to close the Keyboard Shortcuts dialog box.
