While MySQL may not be as full featured and well known as some of the other database systems available, it is more than capable of handling most web application requirements. It is fast, flexible, and cost-effective. This chapter has provided a quick introduction to MySQL, surveying the different versions available, its close integration with the PHP language (covered in Chapter 16), and its datatypes, functions, and basic syntax. You'll learn more about SQL itself in Chapter 18. In the next chapter we'll look at another DBMS based on SQL, Microsoft SQL Server.
