Chapter Twenty Nine: Write for Your Industry

Overview

If you write code for a living and have a good idea that you re eager to communicate to your peers, you have a shot at getting published in a prestigious information technology magazine, on an important information technology Web site, or in a technical book. And, most agreeably, your name will be on what you write.

The superior work you do as a corporate programmer ”writing code elegantly, say, or finding creative solutions to your company s problems ”will bring you no widespread prestige. What you produce, year after year, will be invisible to everyone except the programmers who review and maintain your programs. That is the deal you made when you took the job.

And yet, your experience and talent may have led you to create an important programming technique, or you may have acquired so much expertise in a certain field, that you deserve a forum in which you can articulate your strong opinions on controversial programming issues.

Happily, it s not hard to break the bonds of anonymity. If you write code for a living and have a good idea that you re eager to communicate to your peers, you (yes, you ) have a very strong shot at getting published in a prestigious information technology magazine, on an important Information Technology Web site, or in a technical book that sells for $100 or more. And, most agreeably, your name will be on what you write.
