How to Plan Your Leaving

You know that you need to leave. Perhaps youve even found a job. At this point, many experienced programmers still ask how they should go out the door. With notice? With no notice? My answer is simpleit depends on your companys policy. But no matter what, leave them smiling when you go out that door.

Observe what normally happens when employees leave. If they normally stay for two or three weeks after they give notice, you also will probably be expected to give such a notice, unless you are leaving under quite nasty circumstances. You will find that doing two or three more weeks of productive work as you exit a company is quite easy, even if you dont particularly like your manager or your job.

On the other hand, the policy of your company may be to have you escorted out immediately after youve given notice (not what anyone would consider an enlightened policy, especially when security escorts the person out). If thats the policy, you will, of course, hold your counsel about leaving until the day you plan to depart.
