Chapter Twenty Six: A Big Push Out of the House

Overview

You know that you need to leave. Perhaps you ve even found a job. At this point, many experienced programmers still ask how they should go out the door. My answer is simple ”leave them smiling.

Sometimes, in spite of your research within your own company, you can t find new opportunities and challenges. You re stuck. You re bored. You know the grass is greener on the other side of the computer monitor, but you can t quite get yourself motivated to really assess your situation. And so you do nothing.

Well, while you let moss grow under your keyboard, consider that someone else might also be watching your career and assessing whether you are still a vital member of the team. In other words, while you re thinking you re stuck, someone else might be thinking that you re done, in a very big way.

What can you do about these types of situations? This chapter gives you tips about how to detect shifting winds and, more important, how to leave when the time comes.
